Despite alleged arson attacks on Rohingya, Myanmar claims situation 'under control'

Myanmar's government said it had evacuated at least 4,000 non-Muslim villagers amid current clashes in Rakhine, claiming that they may be hurt in purported attacks by the Rohingya.

In March 2017, the United Nations Human Rights Council announced that it would investigate allegations of rights abuses by the Myanmarese army on the Rohingyas.

"We appeal the global community to exercise "the Responsibility to Protect" as the Rohingya civilian population plunges into another episode of widespread "crimes against humanity" under the hands of Myanmar Armed Forces", said the body in the statement.

As per media reports, thousands of Rohingyas are now fleeing Myanmar for Bangladesh as fresh violence recently erupted between Myanmarese security forces and Rohingya fighters.

Soldiers have allegedly shot indiscriminately at unwarmed men, women and children during their intensified operations against Rohingya insurgents after three days of clashes with militants in the worst violence involving Burma's Muslim minority in five years. There have been numerous eyewitness accounts of summary executions, rapes, and arson attacks by security forces against the Muslims since the crackdown began.

"First they burn, then they shoot, then it is more organised and they go and arrest people", she said adding she was receiving reports of properties ablaze in many different parts of the region.

Pope Francis plans to visit Myanmar and Bangladesh in late November and early December, two countries caught up in a crisis over the Rohingya Muslim minority. There were already around an estimated 400,000 Rohingya in Bangladesh before insurgent attacks in Rakhine last October sparked brutal reprisals by security forces that led to another 87,000 fleeing Myanmar.

But the journey was arduous - and many Rohingya did not make it, turned back at the border by Bangladeshi soldiers.

Centhra notes that there have been calls made by certain quarters for the scrapping of the non-interference clause in the Asean Charter to allow member states to intervene in Myanmar to stop the collective punishment, persecution, and violence against the Rohingya Muslim minority, which Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak characterised past year as genocide.

Lt. Col. Manzurul Hasan Khan of Border Guards Bangladesh said they cordoned off about 1,000 Rohingya after they attempted to enter Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi border guards are turning people away in an attempt to discourage refugees from seeking safe havens in Bangladesh, he said, but many people are waiting near the border before attempting another crossing.

At least 104 people, including some 80 militants, have been confirmed killed.

For some years now, global human rights groups and the United Nations have reported wide-scale human rights violations against the Rohingyas, including extrajudicial killings, gang rapes, arsons and other violence.

Such attacks deserve to be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

ARSA has also taken responsibility for the coordinated attacks on 30 police outposts and an army base that took place on Friday.
