Police beef up security around home of $758.7M Powerball victor

A 53-year-old MA mother has become the biggest lottery victor in USA history after scooping a US$758 million (NZ$1 billion) powerball prize.

"Right now I know she's pulling her hair out with all the harassment and the soliciting phone calls", Lord said.

Wanczyk chose the payment of $480.5 million and refuse to go to the option of 30 payments over 29 years.

Mavis Wanczyk laughs beside state treasurer Deb Goldberg during a news conference (Josh Reynolds/AP) The previous evening, she recalled, she was leaving work with a firefighter and remarked: "It's never going to be me".

"We just all happen to be the lucky people involved, that's all", he said.

Ms Wanczyk has two adult children, a daughter and a son.

The winning ticket was sold at a Pride Station & Store in Chicopee in Western Massachusetts. The winning ticket, she said, was one with numbers that used family birthdays.

"The phone started ringing at 8 o'clock" Bolduc said.

The winners matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball number, officials said.

The odds of a ticket having all six winning numbers are 292.2 million to one, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association.

Bolduc estimated that the Pride chain of stores sells thousands of tickets regularly, which he attributed to their good customer service and high rate of traffic.

According to the MA law, the law requires revealing the identity of the Powerball jackpot victor.

Jackpot winners can face a lot of stress after they win millions but there are resources to help them protect themselves and their money.

The jackpot for Wednesday night's drawing reached $758.7 million.

Amid all the talk about sudden wealth, it's easy to forget that the goal of Powerball is to raise money for government programs in the 44 states where the game is played, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
