Myanmar receives Kofi Annan report on Rakhine situation

The attacks are much larger than those in October a year ago on several police border posts that sparked a bloody crackdown that forced nearly 90,000 Rohingya to flee to refugee camps across the border in Bangladesh.

At least 89 people, including a dozen security forces, have been killed since about 150 insurgents, some carrying guns and home-made explosives, attacked 30 police posts on Friday.

Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, a Rohingyan insurgent group, has claimed responsibility for the attacks as vengeance for the recent raids by the Myanmar security forces.

"This can not lead to a repeat of last year's vicious military reprisals responding to a similar attack, when security forces tortured, killed and raped Rohingya people and burned down whole villages".

The government had been aware of the risk of attacks to coincide with the release of the Commission's final report yesterday and had issued instruction to relevant Union Ministers.

Suu Kyi's office said in a later Facebook post that eight police officers and one immigration officer had been killed and that police had discovered 16 militants' bodies.

They could not enter the Bangladesh territory as BGB members enforced zero tolerance against refugees entering Bangladesh illegally, he said, adding that it could not be confirmed if there was any casualty.

The Rohingya are denied citizenship and classified as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, despite having roots in the region that go back centuries, with communities marginalized and subject to communal violence.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said Saturday that Myanmar's security forces should respect the rule of law while fighting insurgents.

Rakhine is a site of frequent clashes between Myanmar's Muslims and Buddhists.

Myanmar says the group is headed by Rohingya jihadists who were trained overseas but it is unclear how large the network is. United Nations estimates indicate hundreds have been killed, about 66,000 Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh and about 22,000 are displaced within Myanmar.

Amid rising tension over the past few weeks, more than 1,000 new refugees have fled to Bangladesh, where border guards on Friday pushed back 146 people trying to flee the violence.

"25 Aug attack in N Rakine utmost concern!"

In a statement from his spokesperson, the Secretary-General called the attacks "unacceptable" and said he hoped those responsible would be brought to justice. The group said the blockade is starving people to death. According to the Rohingyas and some scholars, they are indigenous to Rakhine State, while other historians claim that the group represents a mixture of precolonial and colonial immigrations.
