Thai authorities hunting for ex-PM Yingluck after court no-show

Forced out of office by a military coup in May of 2014, she was formally impeached in January of 2015.

Yingluck, who is out on bail, faces up to 10 years in prison and a lifetime ban in politics for charges that she mismanaged a major rice subsidy program and cost the Thai government billions of dollars.

Thailand's Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha ordered security authorities to check border crossings and search for former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Friday, commenting "I thought she was fearless enough to show up", after she failed to appear for the ruling in her trial.

The scheme also tarnished Thailand's image in the rice market, as the quality of the grains that were warehoused for a long time deteriorated, leading foreign buyers to lose confidence in Thai rice and choose to buy from other rice-exporting countries.

However, Yingluck did not arrive and her lawyer told the judge that she was suffering from illness related to having fluid in her ear.

Yingluck's whereabouts were not immediately known, and her absence fueled speculation that she had left the country.

Her government was ousted in a coup in 2014 and the criminal case is considered an attempt to crush the powerful political machine founded by Yingluck's brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in an earlier coup.

Mr Shinawatra is believed to use a Montenegrin passport, after his Thai document was revoked, to travel between homes in Dubai, London, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Amid the outcry over the rice subsidy scandal, Yingluck was investigated by Thailand's National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) for the rice subsidy issue and put on trial.

Mr Thaksin remains a galvanising force for his party and a canny political operator.

A guilty verdict for Yingluck on Friday would trigger a life ban from politics, taking out a key family member whose star power and adroit public relations stands apart from the dour elderly generals who now rule Thailand.

Her previous court appearances over an 18 month trial have seen crowds gather outside the court, showering her with roses and chanting support - a rare sight in a nation where political meetings remain outlawed. The 50-year-old politician was last seen Wednesday when she visited several temples to make merits and pray for good luck.

Losses amounted to more than £6 billion, according to the government.

She has maintained her innocence and contends that the charges against her are political. "If she is found she will be arrested", he said. "Now the people have to fight for themselves".

A statement from a judge at the court said: "We don't think that the..."

A coup toppled him in 2006 and he fled overseas following a graft conviction.

Supporters of the Shinawatras accuse the ruling generals of political persecution.

The junta has tried to quash all dissent, outlawing political gatherings and locking up critics and opposition politicians.
