Suspect killed after shooting OH judge in front of courthouse

A second suspect was seen being taken into custody by police.

An Ohio judge was shot outside a local courthouse Monday morning in what officials described as a calculated ambush.

Mavromatis said the suspect apparently backed into another auto in an attempt to escape.

"Every judge should be armed today in America", Abdalla said.

Bruzzese worked in the general and domestic relations division of the court. It is unknown how many shots the probation officer fired.

The suspect was struck three times and killed.

Steubenville City Manager James Mavromatis tells our NBC affiliate WTOV that Bruzzese was talking after being wounded.

Bruzzese was transported by a medical helicopter to a hospital for treatment.

Jefferson County Juvenile and Probate Judge Joseph Corabi says he and other judges park in reserved spots next to the courthouse in eastern Ohio. During the emotional press conference, he said, "Force will be met with force". Abdalla said it wasn't clear whether Bruzzese's bullets hit the attacker. The judge was carrying a weapon and may have shot the suspect at least once. "This was ambush and attempted murder on our judge".

The suspect's body could be seen lying next to a auto at a neighboring bank drive-thru.

Abdalla said authorities have video of the shooting that they are working to have enhanced to show people what happened.

The passenger allegedly told police that he and Richmond had been drinking the night before and that he had only been told that Richmond had to be at court early in the morning.

Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese was shot as he walked toward the entrance of the courthouse just after 8 a.m., the Herald-Star reported.

Neither the suspected shooter nor his suspected accomplice were immediately identified. He says BCI's special investigations, crime scene and cyber units are on the case.
