Valley unemployment rates mostly up for July

The United States' jobless rate declined one-tenth of a percentage point, from 4.4 percent in June to 4.3 percent in July.

The Northern Rural Training and Employment Consortium region of the north state, which includes Butte, Del Norte, Lassen, Nevada, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity counties, increased its unemployment rate by 0.4 percent to 6.2 percent for those counties combined. Manufacturing fell by 14,100 jobs (down 1.1 percent), and mining and logging fell by 1,400 jobs (down 5.7 percent).

The Idaho Department of Labor in a news release Friday says that's the lowest level for the state since mid-2008. "Seasonally adjusted data provide the most valid month-to-month comparison", officials said. "Nonfarm payroll growth in the state remains anemic and labor force participation continues to decline".

Arkansas' labor force and unemployment rate are calculated through a survey of about 800 households in the state.

The rise in unemployment at a time of healthy job growth is often a sign that more people are resuming job searches after having removed themselves from the workforce.

June's unemployment rate was 5 percent. California has now gained a total of 2,597,500 jobs since the economic expansion began in February 2010. Only Oregon with a 2.9 percent increase had a bigger gain, the bureau said. It was down five-tenths of a point from 3.2 percent a year ago.

Weaver said the combination of improved statewide employment and the passing years since the recession have given employers more optimism to hire.

Industries that reported the largest month-over-month hiring were construction, which rose by 3,200 jobs; leisure and hospitality, which rose by 3,200 jobs; and trade, transportation and utilities, which rose by 2,300 jobs. The leisure and hospitality sector added 7,100 jobs from July to July. Professional and business services added 6,700 jobs.
