Suspect charged in slaying of Florida police officer and gravely wounding another

Florida authorities say two Kissimmee police officers have been shot.

Officer Matthew Baxter was killed in Kissimmee when he and his partner, Sgt. Sam Howard, responded "to a suspicious activity call just before 9:30 pm Friday".

The officers did not return fire.

Baxter was the first Kissimmee Police Department officer to be killed in the line of duty in more than 25 years, O'Dell said Saturday morning.

One of the officers, Matthew Baxter, 27, died of his injuries shortly after. "It's too early to tell" O'Dell said when asked if it was an ambush, but added "it's leading that way".

President Trump tweeted early Saturday that his thoughts and prayers were with the Kissimmee Police Department.

Neither officer has been identified, but both were men, sources said.

At least two people were taken into custody and police are looking for a third suspect.

A suspect "began shooting through the door at the officers", using a "high-powered rifle", then went outside and exchanged gunfire with the officers, Bruno said.

Miller, who had recently been involuntarily committed by the Osceola County Sheriff's Office for a mental evaluation, had made threats against police on Facebook, O'Dell said.
