At Least One Dead & Seven Hospitalized After Stabbing Attack In Finland

Finland's main news agency says one person has died in the stabbings in the western city of Turku. The National Bureau of Investigation had taken over the probe from the Turku police department, and the security intelligence police Supo are also involved in the investigation.

Witness Laura Laine told broadcaster YLE that she stood approximately 20 meters (65 feet) from where the stabbing took place. The attack forced the evacuation of several nearby buildings, and police investigated a number of people in a shopping center, but did not link them to the attack.

Turku lies around 140 kilometers (around 85 miles) west of the capital, Helsinki.

The country's president, Sauli Niinisto, visited Turku later yesterday and condemned what he called a "shocking and cowardly act".
