Missouri Lieutenant Governor calls on Senate to remove embattled member

Maria Chappelle-Nadal to resign after she said Thursday she hopes President Donald Trump will be assassinated.

"I hope Trump is assassinated!" she wrote. Other state Democratic leaders calling for Chappelle-Nadal to step down include House Democratic Caucus Chair Gina Walsh and State Representative Josh Peters.

A Missouri lawmaker who temporarily posted a Facebook comment hoping for President Donald Trump's assassination could face an effort to remove her from office.

In response to the events in Charlottesville, Trump condemned the white supremacists, but insisted repeatedly that "both sides" shared blame in the violence that led up to the vehicle ramming. "I'm frustrated. Did I mean the statement? No". She told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch she made a mistake, though she is refusing calls to resign.

"There are people who are afraid of white supremacists", she added. Instead, Chappelle-Nadal cheerleaded for an assassination, which goes against the very fabric of self-governance to which her office owes its existence, just because she doesn't like someone who won an election.

We, as constituents and community members and people who feel the same frustration with our current political landscape stand with Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal. She also tweeted a vulgar message to the governor of Missouri after the state's Highway Patrol sprayed her and others with tear gas in Ferguson in 2014.

"I am not resigning", she told the newspaper.

The St. Louis Field Office of the Secret Service is investigating the comments.

She may have no choice in the matter as the lieutenant governor of Missouri is taking steps to have her removed from office. She added that she would not resign.

Secret Service officials announced on Friday that they were "looking into the comments".

Chappelle-Nadal, a Democrat, represents a district in a St. Louis suburb.

Though she quickly deleted the comment, an image of the statement would soon circulate online.

Chappelle-Nadal made the original comment, since deleted, on Facebook. Chappelle-Nadal has said the comment was improper but she won't resign. He said talk of "assassination" should be the end of her time in the Senate. She also referred to herself as a Patriot in an interview with KSDK, and refused to apologize for the statement. She said the five-word comment was in response to her anger over President Trump's response to violence in Charlottesville, Va., last weekend.
