Hurricane Gert on its way as rainfall warning issued for west

The National Hurricane Center in Miami is watching three weather systems in the Atlantic, all of which have the potential to become storms over the next few days that could eventually move into the Cayman area.

Forecasters have warned that Tayside could be hit by the tail end of Hurricane Gert tomorrow morning.

The Met Office assures citizens that the country is not presently under any tropical storm threat, watch or warning.

Tropical Depression 9 forms; could be Tropical Storm Harvey later today

"This will bring showers across England through the day and as it is quite a slow moving system it will not have cleared into rush hour on Thursday when there could be some further heavy bursts of rain".

While the US National Hurricane Centre said some strengthening is still possible today, Gert is expected to weaken and become an extratropical low by Thursday night.

While Hurricane Gert moves northeastward in the open Atlantic, 3 tropical disturbances are lined up in the eastern Atlantic.

An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the disturbance this afternoon. Current forecast models are taking it due west, a similar track to Franklin, and potentially heading for the Yucatan peninsula.

Should the system shift further north than now projected, a tropical storm watch or warning may be required for some of the Leewards and the BVI in the next 24-48 hours.

The next name on the tropical cyclone list this year is Harvey, followed by Irma. The red and orange colors denote areas of Saharan dust and dry air, which are harmful to developing systems. However, when it moves north of the Leeward Islands this weekend, upper-level winds are expected to become less conducive for further development. Formation chance through the next 48 hour is low at near 0 percent, but it increases to medium, 40 percent, in the next five days.

"Obviously we want to keep everyone safe and secure here, so why take the risk if we're going to get these swells and enhanced waves occurring on the backside of Gert", she said.
