Transfer window change to be voted on by clubs

It makes flawless sense for Premier League clubs to vote to impose their own transfer deadline from the start of next season, with the window closing before a ball has been kicked, but the initiative will be fatally flawed if the back door remains open for players to leave for foreign teams until August 31.

However, the disruption caused by the continuation of the transfer window beyond the start of the season has become so great, and started to affect so many teams, the feeling that something has to be done has begun to take hold.

As with all issues affecting the Premier League, it will need 14 clubs to vote in favour before any change can be made.

Would make sense. Can't see why Watford would oppose it? "If Liverpool were faced with a similar situation to the one they now have with Philippe Coutinho after the domestic window had closed, they would not be able to reinvest the transfer funds and bring in reinforcements", it says.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Swansea boss Paul Clement are among those to have called for a change. "The majority of clubs are in favour, but maybe all have to be for it to go through". They are to decide whether or not to change the deadline for the summer transfer window, which traditionally closes at the end of August/start of September, over three weeks after the season has begun.

Here, we look at some of the top football transfer stories from the British and world media in The Sport Review's Grapevine, published twice a day during the summer transfer window.

"I don't really understand why it goes to the end of August".

They will always back themselves to keep their best players, but it would still lead to a nervous few weeks between the English deadline and the European deadline - unless the rest of Europe falls into line.

"Agents would have to start finalising transfer deals even sooner, ending the short lull in the market that exists now as players and clubs alike assess the market", he says.

"That's why I think if the window is shut before the season starts everything is sorted out and we can get on with the football".
