Sharapova gets Wildcard for US Open

Maria Sharapova will make her first appearance at a grand-slam event since serving her doping ban after being handed a wild card for the US Open.

"Sharapova has played in the US Open main draw 10 times before", the statement continued.

Sharapova is now ranked No. 148 in the world.

"Her suspension under the terms of the tennis anti-doping program was completed and therefore was not one of the factors weighed in our wildcard selection process", a spokesperson for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) told BBC Sport. Sharapova won the US Open in 2006 and reached the semifinals in 2005 and 2012.

Maria Sharapova described her wildcard for the US Open as "so, so special", adding that it gave her goosebumps.

The five-time major champion has not played a major since reaching the quarter-finals in Melbourne previous year and will be competing at the US Open for the first time since reaching the fourth round in 2014.

The 2006 victor will be joined in the main draw by USTA Girls' 18s Nationals champion Ashley Kratzer, US Open Wild Card Challenge victor Sofia Kenin and NCAA singles champion Brianne Minor, defending US Open girls' champion Kayla Day and former junior World No.1 Taylor Townsend.

"Consistent with past practice, a wild card was provided to a past US [Open] champion who needed the wild card for entry into the main draw". "She is now No. 148", the statement added.

The Russian former world number one returned from a doping ban in April but has struggled with injury, which ruled her out of trying to qualify for Wimbledon.

Britain's Andy Murray, Wimbledon victor Roger Federer and US Open champion Stan Wawrinka have all missed this week's event in Cincinnati, while former world No1 Novak Djokovic is out for the rest of the year. Upon her comeback she was denied a wild card for both the main draw and qualifying into the French Open.

Sharapova, currently ranked at 148 on the WTA leaderboard, beat Justine Henin-Hardene to win her sole title in NY but she will now look to win a second US Open crown 11 years on from that triumph.

Sharapova hasn't played in a major since she lost to Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarterfinals on January 25, 2016.
