Submarine in missing journalist case sunk on objective, Danish police say

Danish police say they have not found the body of a missing Swedish journalist inside an amateur-built submarine that sunk off the Nordic country's eastern coast last week. "Furthermore, Copenhagen Police have initiated dialogue with Swedish Police regarding support for a search of Swedish waters", according to a statement from the police on Monday.

Madsen managed to escape the sinking vessel and was picked up by a boat that ferried him back to shore.

Madsen reportedly told police that Wall left the submarine at the island after 3 ½ hours into the trip Thursday night, The Guardian said. Just after being found, Madsen was rescued and the submarine suddenly sank.

The vessel was recovered Saturday in 23 feet of water at Koge Bay - but Wall was not aboard.

Sunday: The raised submarine is brought to land and police technicians begin their examination, but no body is on board.

Møller Jensen added that there were indications that Madsen deliberately sank his submarine.

Madsen also told reporters at the scene that the vessel had sunk after running into problems with its ballast tank, but Danish police have since said he has given them a different version of events - although they would not say what.

This is the third sub Madsen - who, describes himself as an entrepreneur, an artist, a submarine builder and an aerospace engineer - has built since 2001.

Wall, who lives between NY and Beijing and has also written for Vice and the South China Morning Post, specialises in stories about "identity, gender, pop-culture, social justice, foreign policy and the undercurrents of rebellion", according to her LinkedIn page.

Wall, a freelance journalist, was supposed to write a story about Madsen and his Nautilus, according to Danish media. "But I guess that was pretty good because I otherwise still would have been down there".

Authorities were alerted to issues with the voyage when Wall's boyfriend reported her missing early on Friday.

Swedish police said later they were investigating the whereabouts of Wall, who they said had been on the submarine at some point.
