Dolphins' Tannehill out for season, goes on injured reserve

Ryan Tannehill is expected to return to Miami in 2018 as the team's likely starter.

Tannehill will miss the entire 2017 campaign after tearing his ACL in training camp.

When asked about his conversation with Tannehill, Gase said: "It was probably tougher for me".

After conversations with Dolphins team staff members and doctors, Tannehill made a decision to have reconstructed knee surgery. "The fact that it's him and he knows his body and how he feels-It's unfortunate for him because he worked so hard to be available for us".

One source told Schefter that Tannehill's knee was "a ticking time bomb that was going to go off at any time" after he opted not to have it surgically repaired following a partial ACL tear during a Week 14 game against the Arizona Cardinals last season. However, the team has the option to get out of the last three years of Tannehill's contract for just $4.6 million if they choose to do so.

However, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Dolphins' "fear" was Tannehill would require season-ending surgery. He's trying to do everything he can to help Jay (Cutler) out and Matt (Moore) has done a great job.

But the year before, 2015, had been arguably Cutler's best statistically with 3,659 passing yards, a 64.6 completion percentage, and 21 touchdowns against 11 interceptions.

Tannehill will have surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a person familiar with the decision said Friday.
