Police investigate body in freezer

WFMJ reports that Arturo Novoa, 31, and Katrina Layton, 34, were taken into custody over the weekend. They face charges of abusing a corpse and obstruction of justice.

Novoa had asked his landlord if he could move the freezer down to the landlord's basement because his electricity had been shut off and "he didn't want his freezer full of meat to spoil", the police report said.

The alleged ruse was up when a friend became suspicious, discovered the remains and called authorities. The friend had no idea there was a body inside since the freezer was padlocked.

City prosecutor Dana Lantz confirmed Graves was Novoa's girlfriend and claimed Layton moved in with Novoa in Graves' apartment and began assuming Graves' life. "She didn't hold herself out to be Shannon, she just lived her life, using her phone, caring for her dog".

Novoa was Graves' boyfriend.

The couple are in jail and are still to be appointed lawyers, Lantz said. She was listed as missing on the OH attorney general's website.

Authorities believe the victim is Shannon Graves, 28, Novoa's ex who was reported missing on June 22.

"She was the new girlfriend", Lantz told Buzzfeed.

"Early this week, we'll hopefully be able to determine the cause of death and a positive identification", Youngstown Police Lt Doug Bobovnyik said.

Bobovnik said the body appears to be a female, and it's been taken to the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office for forensic examination. Debbie said investigators are pulling Graves' dental records to compare them to the body, which hasn't been identified yet. He added no one has been charged with murder yet because there is still no cause of death.
