Trump replaces Chief of Staff Priebus, appoints John Kelly

The last general to serve as White House chief of staff was Alexander Haig, a former U.S. Army general who served under President Richard Nixon.

In his statement announcing his resignation, Priebus said, "It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve this President and our country".

Following is a partial list of officials who have been fired, have left the administration or were nominated by Trump for a position but did not take the job. He was confirmed as Secretary of Homeland Security by the Senate by a vote of 88 to 11 on Trump's first day in office.

Trump has yet to say who he plans to nominate to take Kelly's place atop the Department of Homeland Security. "Truly, one of our stars".

Priebus was head of the Republican National Committee before joining the White House as chief of staff.

Several years later, when Trump was again considering a presidential run, he consulted Priebus for guidance.

"I think bringing in a fresh face, I think bringing in fresh people, is a good thing", he said.

Months later, after speculation that Priebus had tried to lecture the then-candidate over his anti-immigrant rhetoric, Trump flatly denied that any such conversation had happened.

Maybe Trump does not really want an experienced manager to structure and run the White House professionally, because a strong chief of staff by definition wields a lot of power, which might undercut the president's outsized view of himself as the unrivalled decision-maker. In an interview with conservative TV channel Fox News, she talked about him having somewhat of a hard time and said: "Somebody is trying to get in his way and scare him off".

Jason Miller - communications director for Trump's transition team who was named by the president-elect in December as White House communications director, said days later that he would not take the job.

Federal Bureau of Information director who had been leading an investigation into the Trump 2016 presidential campaign's possible collusion with Russian Federation to influence the election outcome, was sacked by Trump in May.

Kelly has a warm rapport with White House chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon, who has worked closely with him on shaping the administration's border enforcement policy.

Scaramucci has openly accused Priebus of leaking inside information to the press and threatened to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice to shore up the leaks.

With a retired general in charge of his White House now, the president hopes to bring in some discipline and end the current mess inside the White House.
