Ginobili set for Spurs return

League sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that Ginobili, who turns 40 next week, is leaning toward playing another year despite averaging a career-low 7.5 points in under 19 minutes a game for 69 games with the Spurs last season.

The Argentinian has spent his entire career with San Antonio and has won four championships while making two All-Star teams, two All-NBA teams and winning the 2007-08 Sixth Man of the Year award.

The Spurs also hope to keep fellow global player and veteran Pau Gasol, who declined his option for the 2017-18 National Basketball Association season. San Antonio got swept in the Conference Finals by the Golden State Warriors, and many thought Game 4 of that series was the last game of Manu Ginobili's career.

The Spurs lost the great Tim Duncan before last season, so losing another one of the players that made the Spurs so great would have been devastating. His retirement, whether it comes next summer or the one after or maybe never, will signal the end of the scrappy 2000s, where worldwide players began to truly take the Association by storm, and where one of the most unorthodox stars of all time shimmied, shook, and Eurostepped his way into basketball lore. The Spurs capped Ginobili's rookie season (2002-03) with their second league title. In 15 seasons with the Spurs, the native of Argentina ranks in the top five in franchise history in points (13,467), games (992), assists (3,835) and steals (1,349). "But that's not what is going to make me retire or not".
