United States to offer 15000 extra temporary worker visas this year

The extra H-2B visas are for seasonal, non-agriculture workers for jobs at a variety of businesses, including resorts.

This may seem out of line with U.S. president Donald Trump's "Hire American" initiative, and his efforts to reduce or delay visas for skilled foreign workers.

"We're talking about American businesses that are at risk of suffering irreparable harm if they don't get additional H-2B workers", the official said. "You're standing on your feet in the heat of the kitchen peeling onions and washing dishes until 2 in the morning".

A federal law caps the number available at 66,000 a year nationwide, but Congress gave DHS the power to authorize more, after consulting with the Labor Department and determining that companies would be significantly harmed if they weren't able to bring in foreign workers for the season. Until a year ago, guest workers who had already participated were not counted toward the cap. Part of the deal included giving the Secretary of Homeland Security the authority to increase the number of foreign workers, after consulting with the Secretary of Labor, "upon determination that the needs of American businesses can not be satisfied in fiscal year 2017 with United States workers who are willing, qualified, and able to perform temporary nonagricultural labor".

Some employers have complained that relief on the issue was coming too late into the season, given the two months it took DHS to take action on increasing the visa cap. "It's still going to be weeks before any of the workers who are available can make it here".

This isn't the first time the federal government has issued additional H-2B visas after the annual cap was reached. And the tourist season now extends into the fall, when students must be back in school.

Trump has previously opposed allowing guest workers in the United States, though his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., has used H-2B seasonal employees. "This does help with American businesses continuing to prosper".

The Trump Administration says it has a problem with such immigrants and is now determined to step up enforcement to try to cut down on the violations.

Trump said he has relied on the program in the past to find workers for his golf courses and hotels. This is about American jobs, ' " Kelly said.

"Nationally, there isn't actual evidence of labor shortages people talk about", he said.

The programme is created to fill unskilled jobs that Americans do not want, but American companies need to fill in order to keep their business going.

The hospitality industry, along with fisheries and others sectors, have actively lobbied for more temporary foreign workers.
