Spider-Man: Homecoming worldwide box office collection swiftly crosses $100 million mark

Cobranded with Sony Pictures in support of the Spider-Man movie's promotional partnership, and back on consumer demand, the All-In-One Box has something for everyone in the family.

Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Homecoming deals with the young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) who returns home to live with his Aunt May following his thrilling experience with the Avengers. (Wonder Woman and Guardians Vol. 2 were likewise embraced by reviewers and ticket buyers.) The Spider-Man pic skewed male (60 percent), while 50 percent of the audience was under the age of 25, an impressive stat.

Elsewhere, Universal/Illumination's "Despicable Me 3", buoyed by overseas receipts - including big openings in China, France and Germany - has grossed $447.6 million worldwide on an $80 million production budget.

Despicable Me's second weekend domestic finish is an estimated $34 million. Spider-Man: Homecoming also toppled the debut of his last standalone feature, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which opened at $91 million and ended up at $202 million during its theatrical run.

"Homecoming" received an "A" CinemaScore from audiences and a 93% score from critics on the review site Rotten Tomatoes.

The Edgar Wright action-musical Baby Driver held well in third with $12.8 million (£9.9 million) in its second week.

It also didn't hurt that the rest of the releases this weekend weren't major, so the rest of the top earners were in their second weekends.

Kumail Nanjiani's "The Big Sick" is entering the top ten as it expands toward wide release, starting next Friday.

"Wonder Woman" was fourth with $10.1 million, bringing its six-week domestic total to more than $368 million. Meanwhile, A24's "A Ghost Story" starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck should spook $105,000 from four locations during its opening frame. Earlier this summer, Universal's plans for its "Dark Universe" of monster movies got off to a rocky start with the poorly performing "The Mummy".

Homecoming's ranking in the Spider-Man pantheon changes when adjusting for inflation. "The silver lining is the expected continued strength of Spidey, plus 'War For The Planet of The Apes, ' 'Dunkirk, ' and 'Atomic Blonde" all in rapid succession that could fuel a much-needed late summer renaissance at the multiplex".
