Donald Trump Says Mexico Will 'Absolutely' Pay for Wall

On July 7, Trump met with Nieto at the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Hamburg, Germany.

Better late than never: President Donald Trump and Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto sat down Friday for their first face-to-face meeting since Trump took office - nearly six months later than planned.

"Absolutely", he told reporters, responding to a shouted question about whether Mexico would still pay for the wall.

"We've all had a very successful day and a very interesting day", Trump said before being asked about the border wall.

The two did not discuss the border wall privately, according to Nieto's spokesman.

Mexico has repeatedly refused to pay for a wall along its 2,000-mile wide border with the US, which is just one of the issues putting strain on US-Mexican relations. President Trump emphasized the strong bilateral relationship that the United States enjoys with Mexico and noted the importance of renegotiating NAFTA to help workers in both countries. -Mexican border and have Mexico pay for construction. In addition Trump has angered Mexico with attacks on Mexican immigrants as "criminals, drug dealers and rapists" and his insistence on holding tough new trade negotiations with its southern neighbour.

Trump looked to downplay the appearance of tension in their brief encounter on Friday, calling Pena Nieto a "friend".

Trump insists that the wall is crucial to keeping drugs and criminals out of the USA - although those plans still remain unclear.
