Rockets, Nene hit snag in deal, re-enters free agency

Originally, Nene was not interested in the three-year deal the Rockets were offering, and things were at a standstill until Sunday afternoon, when the two sides reportedly agreed to a new deal that will keep Nene in Houston.

The Houston Rockets and free agent forward/center Nene have hit a snag in contractual talks, going back on a four-year, $15 million offer at the start of the free agency window, which he will re-enter as talks fell apart, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical. The fourth year of the deal would extend past Nene's 38th birthday, which isn't allowed under the new CBA - a nuance NBPA president Chris Paul fought for, only to opt-into his contract with the Clippers and accept a trade to the Rockets.

So what happened? Well, Nene is 34 years old, and a four-year contract would therefore carry him into his age-38 season.

In 17.9 minutes off the bench, Nene averaged 9.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, an assist, 0.8 steals, and 0.6 blocks, putting together a well-rounded effort.

Now that they're securing depth after signing Nene to a cheap deal, their roster is looking strong across the board.

While Nene has never made an All-Star Game, won a gold medal or won an National Basketball Association title to serve as a proverbial "peak moment" of his career, he is still going as a consistent, bruising frontcourt presence.
