Low gas prices, higher miles expected

Motorists should expect the roads to be more crowded than ever on two of the deadliest driving days of the year - July 3rd and 4th - as AAA anticipates a record-breaking 37.5 million Americans will hit the road for Independence Day, according to a news release.

As you get into your vehicle, you get into it a time when gas prices are at the lowest they have been in Canada in over a decade.

On a happier note, the release also states that for the first time in GasBuddy's 17-year history, the national average gas price is poised to be lower July 4 than it was New Year's Day.

"That price is 5 cents less than last week and 8 cents less per gallon compared to this day previous year", according to a AAA Texas press release. The average gas price across the US sits at $2.21 according to GasBuddy, a Boston-based price tracker.

As of Monday, AAA had Missouri ranked as the fifth cheapest state for gas at an average of $2.01.

DeHaan said motorists in at least 35 states will find at least one station in those states with regular selling for under $2 a gallon. That's about 20 cents per gallon lower than before Memorial Day and down about a dime from a year ago.

Meanwhile, AAA Colorado estimates 760,000 state residents will travel at least 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend - a record total and 3 percent higher than previous year. The spread between the nation's lowest and highest priced gas stations today stands at $1.29 per gallon. "This is like Christmas in July, instead of seeing fireworks at the pumps like we saw just a few short years ago".

Historically low gas prices and a record-high number of motorists might make deciding on that Fourth of July road trip a little more hard this year. The organization says that 1.25 million more travelers will be traveling this year compared to last.

"Combined, strong employment, rising incomes and higher consumer confidence bode well for the travel industry, in particular this Independence Day weekend", Bill Sutherland, AAA senior vice president of travel and publishing, said in a statement. Airfares are down, on average, 10 percent, with the average round-trip ticket to the top 40 travel destinations running $186.
