Kristen Wiig: "And kids everywhere will be asking, 'Do I have a twin?'"
Had the storyline focused exclusively on Gru and Lucy (Wiig) tracking Bratt down through their work in the Anti-Villian League, the film would be all the stronger for it, but instead it gets bogged down in family matters that never really reach their full potential.
Scott Mendelson of Forbes said: "Despicable Me 3 is akin to eating just enough candy". It's a disappointment, not a disaster, and certainly watchable.
Now in its third instalment the Despicable Me franchise is well on the way to cementing its reputation as one of the most popular animation series beyond the world of Pixar and Disney. While it was easy to throw darts at "Minions" sight unseen, the summer 2015 spin-off had its moments of wit, and was assisted by a new setting (Swinging 1960's London) and a memorable baddie voices by Sandra Bullock.
It reminded me more to a cartoon version of a James Bond film with lots of action, a auto chase in a small city and a magical suit, that turns any man into a superhero.
Under the guidance of returning directors Pierre Coffin (who also voices the ubiquitous diminutive minion sidekicks) and Kyle Balda, the latest film is at least as visually impressive as its predecessors, with crisp and colorful backgrounds to go with sharply detailed characters that include exaggerated physical features. Those tiny yellow buckets of mischief are hoping that the events of the film will lead all of them back to a life of crime. There was a surprising amount of character growth - seriously - and that's a missing element here. This film yet again has Gru (Steve Carell) battling another outrageous villain, this time Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker) a former child star who is hopelessly still stuck in the 80s.
With the Minions craze, it can be easily forgotten why the "Despicable Me" franchise was interesting in the first place. Once the family comes to terms with this Gru learns that he has a long-lost brother and so they decide to meet this brother, and from there hilarity ensues. Dru is a rather blank character, and his goal - to become a villain like his father - adds little to the plot.
But Gru's not exactly the sharpest anti-villain fighter, and when the head of the League is replaced by a stiletto-heeled corporate hatchet-woman, Grucy is out of work after a botched mission against a shoulder-pad and mullet wearing super-villain from the 1980s, Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker). It's a devilish treat to cast Trey Parker in the role, but the character is simply not very amusing.
Prior to his career in film scoring, Pereira was a member of the platinum selling band Simply Red. In a couple years, there will probably even be a Minion Dictionary and children (*& adults*) will start calling one another "Bella" and telling each other "Pola Nola Matoka".
Instead of staying with one exchange or scene too long, a minion is able to step in and make a joke to break things up.
