Air strike kills 42 prisoners in IS group -held town: Syrian Observatory

Syrian activists say an airstrike targeting an Islamic State-run jail in eastern Syria has killed at least 42 prisoners.

Conflict monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that forces from the Manbij Military Council, who have joined the Raqqa offensive under the SDF flag, made "strategic progress" south of the river.

YPJ is an all-female wing of the Kurdish People's Protection Units militia group, or YPG, a USA -backed group critical in the fight to retake terrain from the Islamic State. It will require rigorous communication through the several channels that the United States and Russian Federation have established to avoid getting tangled in Syria's civil war. Either way, "welcoming" Syria to try to take back parts of Syria held by ISIS is insincere so long as United States forces are going to attack them for doing so.

The involvement of Iran illustrates how much the Syrian conflict has become a proxy war for tensions between Iran and Russian Federation on one side, and Turkey and the USA on the other. He said residents expect to find many more killed.

With slightly over 500 USA soldiers involved, the U.S. is committed to closely assisting the SDF so that casualties are low and their limited firepower is most effective.

But Washington's efforts to avoid deeper involvement in Syria's civil war could also become more complicated if Syria engages in another chemical weapons attack.

The PKK is designated a terrorist organization by the United States, and Turkey has long tied the YPG to the PKK.

The fight for Raqqa began in earnest in early June, as Kurdish-led forces, backed by airstrikes from the worldwide coalition, slowly advanced on several neighborhoods of the city considered the de-facto capital of the militant group.

The US, Mattis said, in the near-term would be recovering weapons that the group does not need anymore as the battle advances. We are very open and transparent with our Turkish allies to the north, and they understand and - know, by serial number and by type of equipment, what those - what that equipment is, what those weapons are. "As a result of Operation Euphrates Shield, we had disrupted efforts to establish a terror corridor along our [Turkish] border with Syria". "It'll be based on where does the river bend here, which side of the river is the town on there".
