Roger Federer clinches 92nd career title in stark warning to Wimbledon rivals

Roger Federer has reached yet another final this year at the Gerry Weber Open and is set to take on rising German Alexander Zverev as both men look to win their fourth title of the year. Kvitova secured a one-sided victory by 6-1, 1-0 retired over her friend and compatriot Lucia Safarova, while 21-year-old Barty brought down the sixth-seeded former French Open champion Garbine Muguruza 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Playing in his 140th career final, the remarkable 35-year-old, who has won the All England Club title seven times but not since 2012, became the oldest victor of the Wimbledon warm-up tournament despite taking the entire clay-court season off.

Already boasting a win over Federer in their head-to-head record, the world number 12 is also looking for his fourth title of the year and his first at Halle, having lost in the final last year.

The 28-ranked Khachanov fired a backhand long in the breaker to send Federer through to a showdown with Zverev.

Federer dismissed home hope Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-3 in just 53 minutes as the 35-year-old resumed his domination of a tournament that has become his favoured warm-up for the south-west London grand slam. It was his ninth title at Halle, and the shortest of his 11 finals.

"It's great to get off to a good start and then remind yourself that you've been playing good tennis all week". "I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the 'breaker". Federer though is undoubtedly the greatest grass player of all time, and is in the best form he has been in for quite a while.

"It's warm, it's hot, I'm a little bit exhausted".

"I was doubting myself a little bit, I must admit, because losing in the opening round for the first time in 15 years on grass was always going to shake me a little bit and it did", admitted Federer. At 35, the Swiss player became the oldest victor of the grass-court tournament. "Of course I'm upset with the loss, but going into Wimbledon I feel very confident I can make a deep run there".
