Family recalls loving nature of Seattle mom killed by police

Two officers who fatally shot a 30-year-old Seattle mother in her apartment have been identified.

But Sgt. Sean Whitcomb said a review of surveillance video shows only Lyles left and entered the apartment before Officers Steven McNew and Jason Anderson arrived.

According to audio recordings released by police, the encounter Sunday was calm and professional for about the first two minutes: Lyles allowed them into her northeast Seattle apartment and told them someone had taken a video game console. Lyles was black; the officers, were white. Officials describe her as an unstable person who confronted two officers with kitchen knives and had previous, verifiable run-ins with the law.

Seattle mayor Ed Murray called the incident a tragedy and said it would be "fully investigated" by a federal monitoring team.

'She hit the floor, ' McNew said.

Even if he had brought the Taser, Anderson maintains in police transcripts it would not have been the "appropriate" tool for handling Lyles' abrupt and seemingly violent outburst toward the officers.

As he spoke, Whitcomb's avatar was moving around the digital world of Destiny but not shooting anything at the time.

"What this sounds like is that police want to form some kind of inference, that either she's mentally ill or that she's flat out lying and trying to get officers to the apartment", Bible told the newspaper.

Earlier this week the city released the dashcam audio from moments before the shooting, in which the officers noted that she had trouble with them before.

Among the documents' main points, Anderson reported he had both pepper spray and a baton and McNew had a club (neither had Tasers), but they said they were left with no choice but to use lethal force.

After the shooting, McNew said, 'one of the little babies crawls out from behind and right on top of her, her upper body, you know resting his head against her'.

On Sunday, shortly before 9 a.m., Lyles called 911 to report a break-in and told the operator that her door was open and that "there's stuff missing", from her home. "We'll conduct this investigation thoroughly".

But he said that he wouldn't have used it in that situation because he was trained to use lethal force when being attacked by someone with a knife. "We will get to the truth".
