Theresa May sidesteps questions about response to Grenfell Tower disaster

Dozens of people attending an angry protest for victims of the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy stormed the town hall in London's richest borough on Friday, accusing the authorities of ignoring their plight.

"The recovery of victims from inside the building is enormously challenging, but it is our absolute priority above everything else to recover and identify the victims and let the families know", Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said.

Weakened by a botched election gamble last week, May has been criticized for her muted response to the fire and had to be rushed away from a meeting with residents on Friday under heavy police guard as protesters shouted "Shame on you".

Britain's Press Association says around 70 people are missing.

The Prime Minister met a group of victims, residents, volunteers and community leaders at a church close to the scene of the horrific blaze, and earlier visited survivors in hospital.

But unlike opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who was confronted by a young boy asking "How many children died?", May did not meet with residents, prompting criticism from locals, media and within her Conservative party.

A fire safety expert said that the blaze was "entirely avoidable".

Teams were forced to leave the building on Thursday afternoon when the fire restarted, delaying further the efforts to reach upper floors, where some victims are thought to have been trapped.

With the death toll expected to rise, perhaps substantially, those looking for the missing answers and missing people were growing increasingly anxious.

Asked if there were angry exchanges, Tomlin said: "We tried to hold it well as a meeting".

The government has promised a full public inquiry, but that has done little to a sense of frustration at the lack of information about how the fire moved so quickly to engulf the building.

One furious resident told reporters: "I want her to come out her and face us".

"When the truth comes out about this tragedy, we may find that there is blood on the hands of a number of organizations", Lammy said.

Experts believe the exterior cladding, which contained insulation, helped spread the flames quickly up the outside of the public housing tower on Wednesday.

Anger over the causes of the fire and the government's handling of the tragedy have grown during the week. He said that 24 people were being treated in hospitals, including 12 in critical care.

Members of the emergency services work inside burnt out remains of the Grenfell apartment tower in North Kensington, London. He says it will take weeks or longer to recover and identify all the dead at the charred building.

It was fitted by a company called Harley Facades, which has put out a statement following Wednesday's blaze saying: "We are not aware of any link between the fire and the exterior cladding of the tower".

Nisha Parti, a film producer who has been helping organise help for victims of the fire in Kensington, revealed the local council is giving the measly sum to survivors when they are checked in to hotels.
