Macron woos tech world, pledges French 'startup nation'

Warnings by the rightwing party, Les Républicains, and the Socialist party that it would be unhealthy for democracy if Macron's party won a "monopoly" did not appear to be heeded by voters. The second round of voting will take place on Sunday.

The poll projected the conservative The Republicans party and its allies would be the leading opposition grouping with between 70 and 90 seats, while the Socialist Party, in power until last month, would secure just 20-30 seats.

French president Emmanuel Macron (C) stands next to a robot at the Viva Technology event dedicated to start-ups development, innovation and digital technology in Paris, France, June 15, 2017.

Macron's visit is the first by the recently elected French president to a North African country, and aimed to strengthen cooperation on security and other issues with Morocco, considered an important force for stability in an often-volatile region. The looming landslide is, however, likely to ensure Macron's grip on the legislature.

Macron's victory will not only pave his way to deliver on campaign pledges like labour reforms, renewal of France's commitment to the European Union, countering terrorism, but will also bring to light the changing political scenario in France.

Strengthening a special partnership bond, showing convergence of ideas on multiple global issues and ushering a new era of bilateral cooperation were all conclusions drawn by the French Press from the visit to Rabat by Macron and his spouse Brigitte.

Over half of the electorate did not vote, and many said they saw no goal in doing so.

"I want this country to become a country of unicorns", the French President added later during a keynote speech on Thursday, according to a translation.

When is the French legislative election?

The far-right National Front should get a few seats - up from only two under previous term - including one for its leader, Marine Le Pen, competing in Henin-Beaumont in northern France.

"Saying that the old parties have been buried for good is premature. If, in 5 years' time, there has been no significant progress in bringing down, in a major way, the near 10 percent rate of unemployment (which is what troubles French voters most), significant numbers of voters may start to look for alternatives - even old and familiar ones", Raymond stated.

Other parties also expressed their concern on the low turnout.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe called for high turnout in this Sunday's parliamentary election which is expected to hand President Emmanuel Macron's new party an overwhelming majority.

. "So there's no reason why we couldn't do the job", she said. Voters have shown little appetite for political skulduggery after the grimy presidential campaign. She feels as if living "something very strong, probably historic, and we're going to take part in it".

The results suggest voters embraced Macron's agenda - including a radical overhaul of France's labour laws to give employers more flexibility to hire and fire workers - to a greater degree than many had suspected, and were willing to give him the legislative majority to make that possible. Back then, French politicians damned Macron's tactics with faint praise, calling his move a bold one, and prophesied that the Macron bubble would burst long before the election.
