Uber may ask CEO Travis Kalanick to step down temporarily

But in reality, Michael's departure is a public censure of Travis Kalanick, Uber's embattled CEO who has struggled to transition the company from a startup culture to the world's biggest VC-backed firm.

The recommendations from the months-long investigation into Uber's workplace, being led by former attorney general Eric Holder, were unanimously approved by Uber's board members in an emergency meeting on Sunday morning in Los Angeles.

The departure makes Michael the highest profile Uber exec yet to leave the company amid its ongoing PR crises, but he may not be the last.

A source at Uber previously told CNN Tech there is a key effort underway to fill top leadership positions around Kalanick with seasoned executives.

Uber Technologies Inc said it has extended its internal investigation into sexual harassment claims in its own organization, and a report is expected by the.

The troubles at scandal-ridden ride sharing app Uber have taken another turn as Kalanick's second-in-command and a member of his so-called "A-Team" Emil Michael has left the company.

Last week, Uber's head of its Asia-Pacific operation was sacked after he accessed the medical records of a woman who was raped in India during a Uber ride.

The company has more than 12,000 employees and more than 1.5 million drivers worldwide, who are classified as independent contractors rather than employees.

The complaints proved impossible to sweep under the rug, as Uber past year brought in former US Attorney General Eric Holder to run an investigation into the company. Earlier this year, Kalanick acknowledged that his style of management had to change, with Kalanick admitting that he needed to "fundamentally change and grow up".

The leadership crisis bedeviling ride-hailing company Uber is forcing the company's Chief Executive Officer Travis Kalanick to consider stepping down temporarily pending the completion of a sexual harassment investigation.

In the past four months, Uber has lost a president and the heads of its autonomous driving unit, finance, mapping, policy, software engineering, and product and growth.

As attention turns to Uber's CEO and one of his deputies, the uncertainty highlights a critical weakness in the company's top ranks. An Uber spokeswoman also declined to comment further. The company faces a criminal probe related to a technology it created called Greyball that was used to deceive regulators in cities where it was operating.
