Uber director David Bonderman resigns from board following comment about women

Fellow board member David Bonderman, who founded TPG Capital and now serves on a number of board, then interjected, "Actually what it shows is it's much likely to be more talking".

"Actually, what it shows is it's much likely to be more talking", Bonderman said in response.

Huffington responded: "Oh. Come on, David".

His resignation from the board is effective Wednesday morning.

To the board and the wider company's credit, the joke apparently did not land at all in the meeting, which, just to reiterate, was about a damning report covering how the company has historically treated female employees like garbage.

According to the New York Times, Bonderman has since apologized for his remark in an email to Uber employees.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, who is also mourning the death of his mother in a boating accident, also announced on Tuesday he will take a leave of absence for an unspecified period of time.

Now it's worth mentioning that the company recently hired two female executives: Apple Music's head of marketing Bozoma Saint John as chief brand officer and Harvard Business School professor Frances Frei as senior vice president for leadership and strategy.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, Bonderman called his comment "careless, inappropriate, and inexcusable" and said he understood "the destructive effect it had".

That spurred outrage in the tech world as the incident came hard on the heels of the completion of a law firm's investigation, led by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Tammy Albarran, over allegations of a hostile work environment at Uber, including allegations of unchecked sexual harassment and gender bias.

"We have been joined on the board by an incredible leader who also happens to be a woman", Huffington said in front of an audience of most of Uber's staff.

The next thirty minutes of the Uber all-hands meeting continued to address a 13-page report filled with 47 recommendations on how Uber could fix its own internal culture problems.
