United Kingdom polls: Theresa May's two closest advisers quit after election debacle

"The success of the Labour Party winning more seats than expected was because they tapped into anxiety over public spending cuts since 2010, anxiety over the state of National Health Service, and also concerns with youth voters over the amount of student debt and access to United Kingdom housing - two big issues".

May called the election called in a bid to strengthen her mandate ahead of European Union exit talks.

Hardly had the votes been counted in Britain's indecisive election, in which no party got an outright parliamentary majority, than politicians took to airwaves and tapped away on Twitter to spin what the result meant.

But Graham Brady, who chairs the influential 1922 Committee of backbench Conservative lawmakers, said a "self-indulgent" party leadership campaign would only cause more uncertainty.

Timothy, who has worked with May since she was in the Home Office, hoped MPs would get behind the Prime Minister for the good of Brexit.

Speaking to the "Sunday Mirror", Mr Corbyn said: "I can still be prime minister".

"Mayhem" screamed the headline on the front page of The Sun, Britain's biggest selling newspaper, which normally backs the Conservatives.

Protesters chanted outside Downing Street, blasting the Conservative Party for uniting with the DUP, which has drawn criticism for its right-wing stance on issues such gay rights and abortion.

A chastened Theresa May apologised to her party colleagues last night after squandering the Conservatives' majority with an ill-fated gamble on a snap general election that forced her to turn to Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist party for backing.

A source close to the DUP said the party was seeking more funding for the province and concessions for former British soldiers in exchange for supporting May.

But the wooing of the DUP risks upsetting the political balance in Northern Ireland by aligning London more closely with the pro-British side in the divided province, where a power-sharing government with Irish nationalists is now suspended.

The crisis also increases the chance that Britain will fall out of the European Union in 2019 without a deal.

Opinion polls gave her sky-high personal ratings and her party a runaway lead over the opposition Labour Party.

If Corbyn had won seven seats that were narrowly won by the Tories, he would have been in the position May is in now and forming a "progressive alliance" with the smaller parties involved in the election.

The British pound tumbled against the USA dollar GBP= and the euro EURGBP= after the election result. It is due to present its platform for the next session in the Queen's Speech at the State Opening of Parliament on June 19.

They wanted the campaign to focus on May and a clear message that only she could be trusted. But few believe she can hang on for more than a few months.

Media commentators agreed she had been badly damaged, and some predicted she and her strategy for Brexit could struggle to survive. "You will have a very fractious parliament".

But there is only a two-year timeframe for sealing a deal, under a process unleashed by May herself on March 29 and further delayed by her own election gambit.

The senior Conservative source blamed the party's over-dependency on the tight messaging demanded by election guru Lynton Crosby for failing to endear May to voters tired of elections and rattled by two militant attacks in as many weeks.

"We all need to pull together to take on Theresa May and take on the Tories", she told Sky News. It said Britain was "effectively leaderless" and the "country all but ungovernable". The speech will be followed by several days of debate and a vote.

The arrangement with the DUP will make governing easier, but it makes some Conservatives uneasy. But they, too, advocate a soft Brexit, partly in order to keep the border with the Republic of Ireland open to facilitate free trade between the two parts of the island of Ireland.
