Patriots, Julian Edelman agree to two-year extension

The Patriots have agreed to a contract extension with wide receiver Julian Edelman, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Mike Garafolo, of the NFL Network, had previously reported the two sides were moving toward a deal.

It appears the Patriots are rewarding Edelman for his contributions over the years where he's been significantly under paid, although we won't know for sure until the contract details come out. Last year, Edelman had 98 catches for a career-high 1,106 yards, and he continues to be a key cog in the team's offense, a reliable option in the slot on whom Brady can always rely. Ultimately, Edelman can make up to $15 million in the two years and is now signed through 2019.

However, he really made his mark in the Patriots three playoff games, averaging 7 receptions per game and over 114 receiving yards. In addition, tight end Rob Gronkowski and quarterback Tom Brady are signed through the 2019 season.

Edelman's most important catch - in the eyes of Patriots' fans - was his shoestring reception that kept the team's comeback bid alive in Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons.

Earlier, Edelman said the Patriots' the new receiving unit is expected to improve as the days go by, making the team more unsafe offensively.

The Patriots were obviously in no way uninterested in Edelman long term, but it just felt like given his particular skill-set and the roster construction in New England there was a possibility he might not be around.
