Cape Town storm: Five killed as drought ends

Heavy rains and high winds have swept the area around the South African city of Cape Town, which has been suffering a severe drought.

The storm hit the Cape Peninsula early on Wednesday morning, which some have described as the "worst storm in living memory".

He added that many people had been injured by flying debris.

A severe storm is set to hit the Western Cape on Wednesday, following months of dry conditions in the area.

Radio station Magic reported on Twitter: "This storm has affected the link between our studio and transmitter so we are not on MW 828 but we are streaming via http://www.magic828.co.za".

The storm comes two weeks after the region declared a drought disaster.

The storm is expected to dump more than 50mm of rain in some areas and to trigger waves of up to 12 metres, the South African Weather Service said in warnings.

"Disaster Management cautions the public to avoid the beach, rivers, dams and desist from outdoors activities like hiking", Stayn wrote.

Cape Town workers said they had taken measures to protect some poor residents, who live in sprawling neighbourhoods of makeshift homes.

Residents were also urged to, where possible, use suitable containers to capture rainwater.

"We will be working with schools to ensure that the programme returns to normal [on Thursday] and we request their understanding and cooperation in the circumstances", he said.

"Eight people have died so far in storm-related incidents and thousands have been displaced", said James-Brent Styan, spokesman for the Western Cape local government ministry.

The provincial education department sent out a circular closing schools on Wednesday as a precaution.
