Ainslie retires from America's Cup trials race with damage

"It was an fantastic day of sailing".

Bendigo's Glenn Ashby has made a strong start to the America's Cup semi-finals with Team New Zealand.

One broken wingsail in warmups on Wednesday and a subsequent capsize that damaged the replacement sail and placed questions marks over structural strength and electronic and hydraulic functionality has the Kiwis on the back foot. In 2013, he helped Oracle Team USA rebound from an 8-1 deficit to Team New Zealand by winning eight straight races to retain the oldest trophy in global sports.

The Kiwis, who comfortably won the opener to take a 3-0 lead, flipped over in spectacular fashion before the start of the race after an error by Peter Burling, the teams helmsman. I wouldnt say it was fun, but it was certainly exhilarating. Artemis Racing struggled to control their boat, at one point in their second race sailing off the course completely and incurring a penalty from which they could not recover. We were just trying to get off the start clean.

Burling said the most important thing was that his crew were safe and sustained no major injuries.

"We are obviously thrilled with the day, that was pretty full on by anyone's standards", said Dean Barker on his SoftBank Team Japan's efforts on a victorious day.

SoftBank Team Japan beat Artemis Racing of Sweden twice to take a 3-1 lead in their series.

The winners of the two semi-finals will go head-to-head to decide who gets to challenge holders Oracle Team USA for the America's Cup itself, starting on June 17.

Regatta director Iain Murray told a daily media briefing that yesterday's racing was within the limits agreed unanimously by the teams, and any team had the right to withdraw if they thought it was unsafe.

"We have forfeited racing today due to damage to our wing, we will be back tomorrow (Tuesday) to fight another day", the British team said on Twitter.

Having lost the first encounter, Nathan Outteridge came back fighting to clinch a crucial win and level the scores at 1-1.

For racing to go ahead, America's Cup rules require a minimum average wind of 6 knots (11 kilometers per hour).
