England in Champions Trophy semifinals, beats NZ by 87 runs

England seamer Jake Ball described it as "a great feeling" after an 87-run win against New Zealand ensured they became the first side to qualify for the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy.

New Zealand, therefore, are yet to register their first win in the 50-over global tournament.

New Zealand will look to revive their Champions Trophy campaign by beating England in Cardiff today after a frustrating start to the one-day global tournament.

However, the tourists' chase got off to a terrible start with Luke Ronchi dismissed for a golden duck, and though Kane Williamson hit an impressive 87, they were bowled all out for 223 with just over five overs remaining.

Sent into bat, Jos Buttler provided a late flourish with a quick-fire unbeaten 61 after Joe Root scored a fluent half-century to propel England to 310 all out. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "England bowled very, very well". New Zealand were now 63-2 and relying on Ross Taylor to pick up the slack.

Victory for England on Tuesday would see them into the semi-finals of a 50-over tournament featuring the world's top eight one-day worldwide teams.

After Moeen Ali fell to a sharp catch at backward square-leg off Anderson, a third wicket for the addition of 42 in seven overs meant England still could not press the button.

In an all-round display from the England side, four of the batsmen made scores in excess of 48, while all five bowlers used took at least one wicket.

On a short-boundary pitch, England opted for a second spinner - Adil Rashid - to replace the injured Chris Woakes.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to field against England in the Champions Trophy match at Cardiff on Tuesday.

But the Black Caps looked more than competitive when Williamson and Taylor came together and it took an outstanding delivery from Wood to end a potentially match-winning partnership, when a ball that ballooned up at the skipper was taken by Buttler.

When will the England vs New Zealand ICC CT 2017 match be played?

The jury was out whether the hosts had enough runs after posting a patchy 310 all out thanks to half-centuries from Joe Root (64), Jos Buttler (61no) and Alex Hales (56). Adam Milne and Corey Anderson took three wickets each.

Chasing a target of 311, the Black Caps were bundled out for 223 runs in just 44.3 overs.

There was a further sting in the tail for Williamson when the International Cricket Council fined him 40 per cent and his team 20 pr cent of their match fees for a slow over rate in England's innings.
