Pelosi objects to subpoenas issued by GOP intel chairman

Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn will provide documents to the Senate intelligence committee as part of its probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election.

In addition to those four subpoenas, the committee issued three others — to the National Security Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the CIA — for information about requests that government officials made to unmask the identities of USA individuals named in classified intelligence reports.

The aides maintain Nunes failed to consult with Democrats when he subpoenaed the CIA, FBI and the National Security Agency (NSA). The requests were made by former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan, former national security adviser Susan Rice and Samantha Power, the former USA representative to the United Nations, according to a congressional staffer, who was not authorized to disclose the information and spoke on condition of anonymity.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) has not fully recused himself from the committee's Russian Federation probe.

"If he recused himself on subjects, Russia, then he shouldn't have access to documents relating to subject, Russia, and he shouldn't be issuing separate subpoenas attaching them to a bipartisan subpoenas that were issued this week", Pelosi said Friday.

The four Russia-oriented subpoenas were all requested by Schiff, and are duplicative of subpoenas issued by the Senate Intelligence Committee, according to Fox News.

"According to a tally by USA spy agencies, the House Intelligence Committee requested five to six unmaskings of US organizations or individuals related to [Donald] Trump or Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton between June 2016 and January 2017", the Washington Post reports.

The subpoenas comes a day after Cohen said that he would not cooperate with congressional investigators after several unofficial attempts by senators and congressmen to obtain his cooperation.

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee approved subpoenas for Flynn and Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, in connection with its probe.

Before he could testify, however, Comey had to ensure his appearance at a public hearing would not complicate the ongoing investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is overseeing the probe of possible coordination between Russian agents and Trump campaign officials during last year's presidential campaign.

When intelligence agencies are surveilling the electronic communications of foreign individuals and come across a US citizen, either as a name mentioned during a monitored conversation or as a participant in the conversation, the identities of the USA citizens are protected.

"Commitments to recuse himself have not been fully honored", Adam Schiff said in an interview with MSNBC. He added that he believed Nunes' subpoenas resulted from the Trump administration's "desire to shift attention away from the Russian Federation probe".

A spokeswoman for the committee's chairman, Sen. The president's claim was refuted by former FBI Director James Comey in congressional testimony before Trump fired him last month. Nunes' trip two weeks ago to review Russian intelligence at the CIA raised the ire of Democrats at the time.

Still, Nunes returned to this well on Thursday by tweeting some fear-mongering nonsense about unmaskings violating the civil liberties of citizens.
