Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw gets 2000th career strikeout

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers over eight innings and matched a career-high with 11 strikeouts on Friday, but he was handed a no-decision.

The Dodgers beat the Brewers 2-1 in 12 innings as the Dodgers got a home run from Yasmani Grandal in the 9th to tie the game and then Cody Bellinger put the Dodgers ahead for good with a solo shot in the 12th.

ESPN adds that Kershaw reached 2,000 strikeouts at a historically fast pace.

By another measure, Kershaw will reach 2,000 career strikeouts faster than all but one pitcher.

He retired 20 consecutive batters before surrendering a home run to Domingo Santana at Miller Park stadium in Milwaukee. ESPN reports Dodgers pitchers set a franchise record for strikeouts in a game with 26, tying an Major League Baseball record. Los Angeles is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams. That tied the record for the most strikeouts by a team in a single game.

That's spectacular for any pitcher, let alone one who is nine months shy of 30 years old. Manager Dave Roberts had Chris Taylor pinch-hit for Kershaw.

Wheeler, 26, saw his first major league action this year with Minnesota, allowing five runs - three earned - in three innings in two relief appearances. "Pedro Martinez reached the plateau in 1,715 1/3 innings, and Randy Johnson was next at 1,734 innings".

Nelson hasn't allowed a walk in his last 18 innings. RHP Matt Garza (2-2) goes for the Brewers.

The left-hander achieved the milestone in 1,837 2/3 career innings. Garza has now struggled in two straight starts and it seems likely that his ERA will continue to rise.
