China's Li appeals to Germany for help with certifying C919 jet

Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that Germany and China should work closely together on issues such as protecting the climate at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump has refused to endorse a global climate pact.

Speaking on Tuesday in Berlin, Li underlined strong support for the 2015 Paris climate change accord from China, which overtook the United States as the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases in 2007.

President Donald Trump is expected to announce his decision on whether to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord Thursday afternoon USA time (3 p.m. EDT; 1900 GMT).

"China will stand by its responsibility", he said, adding that Beijing would keep working with global partners to address the problem of climate change.

Ms Merkel said she wanted quick progress on an EU-China investment deal and that this would be a precondition to any free trade talks, a move Mr Li said would be timely.

In Brussels, the Chinese Premier will co-chair the 19th China-EU leaders' meeting with European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, and pay an official visit to Belgium.

"We are both ready to contribute to stability in the world", the Chinese premier told reporters, echoing comments made by Merkel who said Germany should expand its partnership with China at such a time.

Russian Federation joined the chorus speaking out in favour of the climate accord.

"We will continue to lobby the Americans and the White House to show the leadership they have shown in the past on reducing CO2, " he said.

She said Beijing will uphold the outcome of the Paris Agreement and its implementation.

The Chinese premier will travel to Brussels to meet with European Union officialslater on Thursday, where he is expected to discuss issues such as climate policy, trade and North Korea.

Mr Li said he believed the two had found a solution on the issue of Chinese quotas for electric cars after a lengthy discussion.

However, thorny issues remain between the two exporting nations, with Mrs Merkel insisting that China open up its markets and that German firms operating there should have a level playing field.

Merkel and Li met hours ahead of Trump's decision on whether to withdraw the USA from the Paris climate accord. Merkel has been trying to play down any notions that she plans to pivot away from the U.S. in the wake of an impasse on climate change and towards other powers.
