Officer who shot Tamir Rice is fired in unrelated matter

Timothy Loehmann, the Cleveland police officer who fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014, was sacked on Tuesday after rules violations, the city's police department said.

Cleveland authorities also announced that Frank Garmback, the officer driving the patrol vehicle at the time Loehmann shot Rice, would be suspended for 10 days for administrative rule violations of his own.

Timothy Loehmann was sacked for providing false information in his application to join the Cleveland Police Department, allegedly lying about how his brief period of time with the Independence Police Department came to an end, Cleveland.com reported.

"And Garmback should be fired, too, for his role in pulling up too close to Tamir", Samaria Rice said. The Cleveland Police Department did not review Loehmann's personnel file before hiring him in March 2014. Loomis says officers haven't been fired before for that reason. He resigned after six months from that police force after being deemed unfit to serve as a police officer.

Garmback was charged by city officials for failing to employ proper tactics when he operated the patrol auto the day Rice was shot. "Patrol Officer Loehmann will be terminated from the Cleveland Division of Police".

Jury selection is set to begin in the trial of a police officer accused of fatally shooting a black motorist whose death generated national attention when the aftermath was streamed live on Facebook. The emergency dispatcher was suspended from work for eight days for violating protocol in her handling of the call. "Tamir Rice died early the next day".

A subsequent criminal investigation by local prosecutors closed a year and a half ago, without bringing charges against the two officers.

Security footage showed that Loehmann and Garmback's police cruiser skidded to a halt near Rice and within two seconds Loehmann opened the vehicle door and began firing at Rice.

An investigation found the officers had not violated procedures but also uncovered details which led to Mr Loehmann's dismissal.

"We are in fear the other shoe is going to drop due to additional accountability failures by the City of Cleveland". Constance Hollinger didn't tell the officers that the man who called 911 about "a guy" pointing a gun at people said the suspect could be a juvenile and the gun might be a "fake".

The city of Cleveland settled a wrongful death lawsuit past year with the Rice family for $6 million.

The city agreed to pay a $6 million dollar settlement to Rice's family to settle a civil lawsuit in April 2016.
