Union: Up to 40K walking off the job at AT&T this weekend

AT&T workers across the country walked off the job to start what could be a three-day strike.

After a one-day strike, AT&T agreed not to require technicians to perform work assignments outside of their expertise.

AT&T Wireless workers in ME are joining a nationwide strike by the Communications Workers of America against the company in an attempt to win better terms in stalled contract negotiations.

AT&T Wireless workers - some 21,000 of them - have given management until Friday, May 19 at 3 p.m. ET to come to the table with "serious proposals that invest in good jobs with a future".

He said the contracts at issue Friday cover a small portion of the company's 265,000-person workforce. If an agreement can't be reached quickly, retail stores in several states will likely shut down this weekend as well.

Marty Richter, an AT&T spokesman, said the company was offering the wireless workers wage and pension increases and called the willingness to strike "baffling".

The group is from the Communications Workers of America Local 4320. AT&T workers will return to work on Monday and have vowed to do what they have to do if AT&T violates their rights or an open-ended strike becomes necessary.

In March, about 17,000 AT&T wireline workers in California and Nevada went on strike.

This is a strike happening with over 40,000 AT&T employees across the country. AT&T said the stoppage is slated to end at midnight Sunday. CWA was negotiating on contract conditions, wages and on job security.

Employees claim the company is demanding more work for less and it is looking to third party dealers and overseas workers.

"We're prepared, and we will continue working hard to serve our customers", said AT&T, which notes that striking workers account for about 14% of its workforce.

What's most important is we're all family, whether you're a union member or not.

But AT&T is under pressure from Wall Street to cut costs after its recent acquisition of Time Warner Cable for a whopping $85 billion-it also took on huge amounts of that company's debt.
