French president talks to Putin, faces media troubles

The legislative elections in June remain very uncertain for Macron who, without a majority in the French National Assembly, will be in a very hard position to carry out the reforms that Berlin and European partners are demanding.

Several ministers, including Le Maire, have said they will stand in the parliamentary election, and Philippe confirmed that they would have to quit the government if they lost.

Germany is looking to Mr Macron to revitalise France as an economic power and political heavyweight in the European Union, which is facing complex divorce proceedings with its current number two economy, Britain.

Freshly elected French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are the new power couple leading the charge against anti-European populists and trying to put the struggling EU back on track, analysts say. "So that is going to be of help for us, because we want to have a stronger Europe".

French President Emmanuel Macron's new centrist party has stretched its lead in the polls ahead of parliamentary elections next month, new survey data showed Thursday, adding to the positive momentum for the 39-year-old leader.

It also needs unanimity among the 28 and that is impossible until Britain's departure is complete and the 27 set about their own future.

About potential changes on the main EU treaties, Merkel said the union can not resist the transformations across the world.

"In the past, the subject of treaty change was a French taboo". But she also made clear that treaty changes were not a topic immediately on the table.

The French president underlined that changes to European Union treaties had been a taboo for France in the past, but this would not be the case in the future.

The freshly inaugurated French President embarked on an ambitious agenda on his first full day in office - naming a prime minister and then heading off to Germany on his first foreign visit.

The new French president, Emmanuel Macron, and German chancellor, Angela Merkel, have broken with previous statements by saying they would be prepared to look at changing European Union treaties in order to allow a further integration of the Eurozone, according to the Guardian.

After his meeting with Merkel, Macron stressed that he was not in favour of eurobonds - loans underwritten by all members of the eurozone, which some conservative German politicians have described as a vision of "hell" for their voters.

Macron sought to bat away German fears on debt, saying he was opposed to metalizing "old debt" between eurozone countries. "It will include projects that are not going to emerge overnight, but we share a belief that we should not only tackle Brexit but also think of the ways to strengthen the remaining European Union countries and the eurozone", Merkel said.

"We need more pragmatism, less bureaucracy and a Europe that protects our citizens", he added.

In part that's because Berlin is overwhelmingly relieved that it's not Marine Le Pen walking up the red carpet.

Mr. Macron himself sounded a note of skepticism about the political obstacles standing in the way of such major changes.

France's new president is hosting the International Olympic Committee to try to boost Paris' bid to beat out Los Angeles in the heated race for the 2024 Games. She is scheduled to give a television interview on Thursday night and an announcement is expected by week's end.
