Cornyn among 4 interviewing for Federal Bureau of Investigation director

President Donald Trump is looking for a replacement after he abruptly fired James Comey on Tuesday. On the Republican side, obvious potential candidates for appointment or election would be Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Land Commissioner George P. Bush and U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee who toyed with running against Sen.

Cornyn is no stranger to the law, but his legal background is as a state judge (San Antonio district, 1984-1990, then the Texas Supreme Court, 1990-1997) and prosecutor (Texas Attorney General, 1998-2002), rather than an investigator.

Other lawmakers reported to be on the short list include South Carolina Representative Trey Gowdy, a form federal prosecutor, and former Representative Mike Rogers from MI.

President Donald Trump is considering almost a dozen candidates to succeed ousted FBI Director James Comey, a group that includes several lawmakers, attorneys and law enforcement officials.

A Duke-educated lawyer, McCabe was named past year as the FBI's deputy director, the No. 2 position in the bureau, overseeing significant investigations and operations.

"I think the next Federal Bureau of Investigation director needs to be someone who, by their appointment, causes everyone in the nation to feel whatever the Federal Bureau of Investigation does is going to be beyond reproach - no partisanship, no loyalty kinds of issues other than to our country", he told reporters.

Senate Democrats likely will stall on whomever Trump nominates while Republican senators such as Susan Collins of ME and Lindsey Graham of SC have voiced concerns over nominating someone to the position who works in a partisan environment.

Cornyn's spokesman said, "Sen". Trump's nominee will fail if three Republicans vote against their president. "But these are not normal circumstances".

The latest example of his too-rare rationality was his objection to the suggestion that President Trump should appoint Graham's colleague Sen.

However, Mr Malone said even if this is the case, the Senate may block Trump's nomination.

Cornyn has in recent weeks become more of an outward defender of Trump.
