Spanish Grand Prix: Red Bull can see gap to Ferrari narrowing

An 18-year-old Verstappen entered the record books when he became the youngest driver to win an F1 race at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix in his first outing for Red Bull's senior team.

"I'm not sure what we can expect from this weekend", said the Spaniard.

But just how much ground they can make up will depend on the extent of the upgrades Mercedes and Ferrari bring.

Gifted a podium finish in Spain despite being over a minute behind the race victor, Daniel Ricciardo says Red Bull will take what they can for now.

"At the moment we never had the chance for that", he says.

"I think Mercedes are a bit ahead, they got a good step as well from their package. I think I got the maximum out of the vehicle today and moving on to Monaco we will have a few more updates, which will hopefully give us another step and at that track it's fair to say anything can happen". "The people at the factory can be very happy with this, and now we need to keep pushing to close the gap even more".

"We have come from 1.5 to 0.6s already which is a massive step, we just need to keep on pushing from the auto side and wait on what comes on the engine, we can not control that".

"But we follow our way, our have own programme, and we want to continue to follow our programme". Verstappen says the Barcelona parts have changed the entire feel of the auto.

"I think everywhere, there was an improvement".

"Personally for me, the balance was really good, now we just need to keep on working to get even more downforce on the vehicle. Maybe you should ask the Italians - they seem to know more than I do".

"There's still a bit to unlock from the auto and then the rest we need to get it from the engine side as well, because we know in qualifying especially Mercedes can just turn up the engine, which we can't do".

His Australian team-mate Daniel Ricciardo qualified sixth and will share the third row of the grid with him at the start of Sunday's (May 14) race.
