Singapore's leaders congratulate South Korean President Moon Jae In

"I will quickly move to solve the crisis in national security".

Mr Moon took his oath of office in Seoul's National Assembly building a day after his decisive win. Even though he did not go to Pyongyang himself, Im was convicted and jailed over the trip. "And when the conditions are right, I will also go to Pyongyang", Moon said during his speech.

As the Moon administration would be less interested in confrontation with North Korea than the Trump administration, Jeon suggested Moon could "act more friendly toward Russian Federation and China rather than the U.S".

Talking to reporters, Suh endorsed Moon's call for a summit meeting with North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un, although saying it would be hard for such a meeting to take place soon, considering the tension over the North's nuclear program.

Moon has stressed that he and Trump are on the "same page", CNN reports.

The White House congratulated Moon, saying it looked forward to working with him to strengthen the longstanding U.S.

His comments are in contrast to recent tough talk from the Trump administration, which has not ruled out military action against the North.

Moon expressed his hope to visit Trump and Xi in the near future, pledging cooperation with both in denuclearizing North Korea.

Korea NetMoon Jae In, the Democratic Party candidate who supports rapprochement with North Korea, declared victory in yesterday's presidential election in South Korea, which he won by a large margin.

The Moon campaign template for foreign policy outlines a return to the liberal foreign policies that his political mentor Roh Moo-hyun followed a decade ago before conservatives re-took control of the Blue House. For anything close to Sunshine-esque engagement, Moon would have to carefully navigate South Korean domestic law necessitating accountability on human rights for aid to North Korea or and avoid violating worldwide sanctions.

North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons has advanced and Kim Jong Un has tied his survival to the nuclear project.

Moon is expected to have his first conversation with Trump in a phone call Wednesday, Yonhap news agency said, citing unnamed Seoul diplomats.

He added that he would have "serious negotiations" with the U.S. and China over the controversial deployment of anti-missile system Thaad.

"I will do everything I can for peace on the Korean Peninsula ..." While the new president has questioned the deployment of THAAD, it is unlikely that the deployment process could be reversed, as the system is already operational and has initial intercept capabilities.
