Lyft, Google's Waymo teaming up to work on self-driving cars

Google parent Alphabet and Lyft will work together on self-driving technology.

Meanwhile, Waymo released a statement indicating that their technology coupled with Lyft will help expand their reach.

2 US ride service by ride volume, in a statement said a deal to launch self-driving pilots would accelerate its vision for transportation and Waymo, which is beginning tests of a self-driving auto service in Phoenix, said the partnership would let its technology reach "more people, in more places".

The arrangement with Lyft suggests Alphabet is unlikely to rekindle its relationship with Uber.

The deal could significantly turn the tide for the ride-hailing app business as Uber, which is engaged in its own autonomous vehicle efforts, is the current ride-hailing app leader. David Drummond, Alphabet's chief legal officer, stepped down from Uber's board past year. The judge in the case recently recommended to federal prosecutors the allegations be investigated as a criminal matter and denied Uber's request it be settled in arbitration.

Waymo is also suing Uber, claiming it is using secrets stolen by a former engineer to develop its self-driving technology.

Still, Lyft said the deal is non-exclusive and will allow it to continue a self-driving partnership with USA automaker General Motors Co, which is a Lyft investor.

The alliance between the two show that many companies are trying to acquire a piece of the market for self-driving vehicles, which many believe will ultimately be a multibillion-dollar industry, the New York Times reported. It has about 600 Chrysler Pacificas and has held talks with Honda Motor Co to get its autonomous technology into the Japanese automaker's cars.
