Pyongyang accuses Central Intelligence Agency of assassination plot against Kim Jong

In a statement carried on state media, North Korea's ministry of state security on Friday said that a "hideous" group sanctioned by the CIA and South Korean Intelligence Service (IS) had infiltrated North Korea "on the basis of covert and meticulous preparations to commit state-sponsored terrorism against the supreme leadership".

It's only the latest in a string of odd, as-yet-unproven accusations over the years that a proud, highly sensitive North Korea has leveled at its U.S and South Korean rivals.

The ministry alleged that the North Korean man had been "turned" by the CIA and the South Korean intelligence service while working in Russian Federation in 2014.

Attacks on US and South Korean intelligence agencies "will begin immediately", the North Korean government said.

This undated picture released from North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on May 5, 2017 shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un (C) inspecting the defence detachment on Jangjae Islet and the Hero Defence Detachment on Mu Islet located in the southernmost part of the waters off the southwest front.

"By relentlessly bringing in a number of strategic nuclear assets to the Korean peninsula, the U.S.is gravely threatening the peace and safety and driving the situation to the brink of a nuclear war", North Korean officials said in a statement in April, according to KCNA.

Recent events like the U.S. warships sailing across the Korean peninsula and the activation of the THAAD missile shield in #SouthKorea have exacerbated tensions in the region. #NorthKorea has also threatened to carry out its 6th nuclear tet.

Earlier this year, Kim Jong-un's half brother, Kim Jong-nam, was killed with the banned nerve agent VX at Kuala Lumpur global airport.

"This heinous crime, which was recently uncovered and smashed in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is a kind of terrorism against not only the DPRK but the justice and conscience of humankind and an act of mangling the future of mankind", North Korea's ministry of state security said in a statement.

"They told him that assassination by use of biochemical substances, including radioactive substance and nano poisonous substance, is the best method that does not require access to the target, their lethal results will appear after six or twelve months", the statement said.

It has said its preferred route is to pressure North Korea to given up its nuclear and missile programs through sanctions. Those sanctions - and that tension - could get even tighter if North Korea is added to the USA list of state sponsors of terror.

But he also said this week he would be willing to meet Kim Jong-un, in the right circumstances. North Korea has even dismissed traditional ally China over its nuclear program.

The drill was particularly disturbing for South Koreans who remember a failed attempt by North Korean commandos in 1968 to assassinate then dictator Park Chung-hee, the father of Park Geun-hye.
