Facebook to play down links to websites with deceptive ads

This basically just means that the post might now appear as high up in users' News Feeds.

Facebook says that it wants its community to be informed, and identifying and showing fewer posts that are "misleading, sensational and spammy" will allow the News Feed to show more informative posts. Wednesday, the social media platform announced that it plans to start doing something about it. If you're publishing high-quality posts from your own Facebook Pages, you may see a small increase in traffic as users see more of your stuff than spammy links to low-quality websites.

They already made a policy that will detect the low-quality web pages during advertising on their platform.

"If we determine a post might link to these types of low-quality web pages, it may show up lower in people's feeds and may not be eligible to be an ad", said Facebook explaining how it will deal with these sorts of posts. The gist of it involves tagging all links or posts from websites where, upon landing on the pages themselves, users only get useless content and get bombarded with disruptive ads. Facebook trained an artificial intelligence program by showing it hundreds of thousands of examples of bad pages, taking into account pop-up ads, sponsored content, the number of ads and other characteristics.

In the aftermath of the criticism and accusations, the company banned fake news sites from using the in-house ad network.

The company added that the changes would be rolled out to users over the next few months.

Marc Goldberg, the CEO of Trust Metrics, a company that evaluates online publishers and apps for quality, told BuzzFeed News that Facebook's decision to down rank links from sites with low-quality ads could help choke off revenue for fake sites and fraudulent publishers.

The idea is to disrupt the economic incentives for posting such low quality webpage experiences, since spammers often make money if you click on that "too good to be true" link.

Some publishers have complained that they are reduced to using such ads because Google and Facebook have taken over most of the digital advertising market, and made it hard for publishers to make money from their content without resorting to such methods.
