Alonso will 'talk to anyone' for winning F1 seat

Fernando Alonso insists he was not trying to be amusing by posting a picture of himself playing tennis shortly after encountering another Honda engine failure in opening practice for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Alonso left the circuit in order to play tennis, before returning for the second session, and Brown defended his driver's actions.

Practice will resume on Saturday before qualifying for Sunday's race.

McLaren's team radio told him to "stop the auto, stop the auto, engine problem" as a pool of liquid dripped from the underside of the vehicle. "And it has aroused a huge interest", Alonso said.

After suffering an engine failure on the formation lap ahead of the Russian Grand Prix Alonso says Honda's early problems in Barcelona were not a surprise.

Alonso managed to do 21 laps in the second practice session in the afternoon, but he finished last. "I have had very little time in recent weeks to train with traveling etc so when they confirmed I had two hours free, instead of being here watching on television I went for some training".

"My intention, and my first priority, is to race here (F1) next year, but not just to race... If not, I will be happy to talk to anyone". I preferred to do sports, because I wanted to be ready if the vehicle was, said Alonso. "So, I hope this will be the starting point of a new championship for us".

The rest of the practice saw Mercedes register the top two times - with Ferrari's and Red Bull's combined four cars less than a second behind - under sunny skies in northeastern Spain following Thursday's showers. He has struggled with inferior cars since, and his growing frustration has driven him to trading the endless twisting and turning of the labyrinth-like Monaco GP for a run at the Indianapolis 500 on an oval track later this month. Hamilton lowered his own mark after lunch to clock a day's best time of 1 minute, 20.802 seconds, with Bottas only 0.090 seconds slower. Rumor has it that he could return to Renault, with which he won his two world championships over a decade ago, or that he could take Kimi Raikkonen's place alongside Sebastian Vettel back at Ferrari again. In September or October, if we're in a position where I see a possibility to win in 2018, I will be more than happy to stay with the team. So I don't know.

In the morning, Alonso had just made his entry on the track before his Spanish fans, when he stopped at the third corner, rear wheels blocked.
