Huge first quarter sales drop in China for Samsung smartphones

While Samsung's (SSNLF) new flagship Galaxy S8 and Apple's (AAPL) tenth anniversary iPhone will duel for mobile supremacy later this year, Strategy Analytics reports that other phones from the dominant device makers topped sales in the first quarter. Perhaps because of the perception that only latest smartphones sell-the iPhone 5s was launched in September 2013.

Among the reasons that people purchase a particular smartphone - 4G capability spiked in Q4 2016 following the launch of Reliance Jio's 4G network, with 31% of consumers citing that as a decisive purchase driver. Everyone is trying to make it big in India including established brands like Samsung as well as Chinese companies including Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo. "At the same time, iPhone 7 remained the best-selling device in urban China with 3.8 percent of a market that has become increasingly fragmented".

Oppo now considers India as one of its key markets, and focuses its marketing efforts to promote sales of its smartphones in the local sports and entertainment segments. Adding other iPhone 7 handsets to the figure, Apple's lineup accounted for eleven percent of the first quarter sales.

Also, the Kantar Worldpanel report states that the advent of 4G will also spiral Apple's growth, as users will look to buy more premium 4G handsets. And its rise continues, according to the report.

The greatest increase for Apple came in Great Britain, with 40.4 percent of smartphone sales, an increase of 5.6 percentage points, and in the U.S., with 38.9 percent of smartphone sales, an increase of 5.2 percentage points year-over-year. Two-thirds of smartphones sold in the country cost less than $180, while devices over $300 take up only a small fraction of the market. Apple's quarterly revenue grew by "over 20 percent" in the Indian market. In a country with a population of more than 1.3 billion, that's a massive target market!
