ATP MADRID: Andy Murray exits tournament, stunned by Borna Coric

After Murray reached the semi-finals at the Barcelona Open, few people thought he was slowly getting back to his best but after his third round exit at the Madrid Open it looks like he still has a lot of work to do.

Such form is a far cry from 12 months ago when he entered the French Open, which this year starts on 22 May, after winning the Rome Masters and reaching the final and last-four of the Madrid Masters and Monte Carlo Masters respectively - the start of a run which ended with him reaching the world No1 spot.

"I definitely think I need to be concerned about today", Murray said.

"Against Thiem in Barcelona, I was disappointed to lose, but I felt like I competed really well", Murray said.

Coric has now beaten the Wimbledon champion in two of their four meetings having thrashed Murray at the Qatar Open at the Dubai Tennis Championships in 2015.

"I couldn't imagine this when I woke up this morning, I always believed but I wasn't sure how I was going to play, but in the end I played as I had dreamed".

"There were a lot of things that weren't particularly good", said Murray.

However, a couple of forehand mistakes from Coric allowed Murray to break straight back only for the two-time Madrid victor to then lose his serve once more to fall 3-4 behind.

"If you re playing against a Spanish player in Madrid, it s obviously a different game, it s a different feeling", said Djokovic.

Coric, 20, only made the main draw as a lucky loser from the qualifying event and had lost three straight first rounds prior to this.

"Things can change fast, but you need to have the right sort of ideas, correct ideas, understand why you're in the position you're in".

The Croatian did not let Murray off the hook as he booked his place in the quarter-finals.

"It wasn't until really nearly the last game where I said, OK, I'm going to try, and I stood way back behind the baseline", Murray said. That was very obvious.

He later surrendered his serve in the seventh game, giving Coric three break points.

And he rammed home his advantage by breaking the fragile Murray serve again to close out the set.

However, Kyrgios showed little resistence after being broken once more in the first game of the second set as he was whistled from at the end by Spanish fans unhappy at only seeing Nadal on court for 73 minutes.

The head-to-head record between the two is now tied at 2-2.

Coric will face either Grigor Dimitrov or Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals.
